Nancy Valino: “Looking after the children, I just consider them as my own.”

HONG KONG (November 2020) - At age 22, Nancy left college for giving birth to her child, while her boyfriend left her. Now, years later, she left the Philippines, for raising her daughter.

As a domestic worker, Nancy lived in Hong Kong for over 15 years, has worked for two employers, one Chinese family, one Swedish family. For her, the most difficult part is not the workload, but the empathy she feels for the children. She said, taking care of the children is the only chance she can be a mother again.

Of course, she appreciated these job opportunities, however, she plans to go back to the Philippines in the next two years. As a foreign worker, she has to deal with inequality. She shared her own situation, low salary, no second job, no chance to change profession, and also no possibility to get a permanent residency, even after a 15-year-long living.
